October 16, 2014: If there is one photography exhibition or documentary you MUST see in 2014, it would be ‘Finding Vivian Maier’. The Amsterdam Photo Club is planning a series of events to discover the photographic work of the nanny in 60-70’s New York and Chicago who, unbeknown to many, had a secret passion for photography. Her incredible body of work, only discovered after her death, lives on and has established her as one of the master street photographers.
Real estate agent, John Maloof explains how a trip to a local auction house, in search for old pictures to use for a book history of his neighborhood, resulted in him bidding and winning a box full of old negatives. John, goes through the massive quantity of negatives, describes how impressed he was by the quality of the images, quickly determined they were not reverent to his project and just put them away. That could have very likely had been the end of the story, if the power of the images had not pushed him to fall in love with photography.
What happened next is nothing short than a photography phenomenon …
The Amsterdam Photo Club will be organising an excursion to FOAM gallery in Amsterdam on Saturday, November 8, 2014, followed by a screening of the documentary: Finding Vivian Maier.
